Bukkyo University (Kita-ku, Kyoto) has announced a new educational reform branding, "BUNext," for a large-scale educational reform to be implemented over five years from 2028 to 2032. The abbreviation "BU" of the university is reinterpreted as the English phrase "be you," conveying the message that each individual should challenge themselves in their own way and support their journey to discovering a new version of themselves.
The main contents of the five-year educational reform (all still in the planning stages) include establishing a new department in the Faculty of Letters and renovating the Faculty of Sociology and the Faculty of Social Welfare in 2028; establishing a new course in the Faculty of Education and creating a new Faculty of Management in 2029; and establishing a new department in the Faculty of Social Welfare in 2030. Furthermore, a new plan aimed at developing the Faculty of Sociology is also being considered for 2032.
The university has eight faculties: Buddhism, Literature, History, Education, Sociology, Social Welfare, Health and Medical Care, and Nursing. It has two campuses: the Murasakino Campus (Kita Ward, Kyoto City) and the Nijo Campus (Nakagyo Ward, Kyoto City). At the Nijo Campus, a newly constructed building located a one-minute walk from Nijo Station will begin full operation in September 2026, and the Faculty of Social Welfare and the Graduate School of Social Welfare are scheduled to relocate from the Murasakino Campus.
