Osaka Institute of Technology will open a "Space Manufacturing Center (tentative name)" at its Omiya Campus (Asahi Ward, Osaka City) in April 2028. This center will be a new manufacturing hub aimed at promoting research and development of space-related technologies and practical human resource development, thereby contributing to the development of Japan's space industry.
In recent years, against the backdrop of the expanding global space business market, Japan's space industry, including rockets, satellites, and space utilization services, has been growing rapidly. The government has positioned the space industry as a key area in its growth strategy, and private companies are increasingly entering the field. On the other hand, a major challenge is the shortage of highly skilled personnel to support the development of the space industry. The space sector requires personnel who can work across a wide range of engineering fields, including mechanical engineering, electrical and electronic engineering, information technology, materials science, control systems, and AI, and universities are expected to develop practical educational and research environments.
Therefore, Osaka Institute of Technology will establish a "Space Manufacturing Center (tentative name)" to promote research and human resource development that supports space development, such as materials used in spacecraft, rocket technology, landing technology for planetary probes, and planetary exploration robots, through collaboration between students, researchers, and companies. In addition, through student projects (manufacturing extracurricular activities), the center will work on the design and manufacture of small rockets, microsatellites, and planetary locomotion machines, aiming to cultivate practical human resources who can play an active role in the space industry.
