On August 21, 2026, the Kawasaki City Board of Education announced the status of its considerations for establishing a new National Institute of Technology (KOSEN), indicating its aim to open the school as early as the 2030 academic year. The planned site for the main campus is Kawasaki Municipal Kawasaki Comprehensive Science High School, which has announced plans to cease accepting new students for its part-time program from the 2028 academic year and for its full-time program from the 2029 academic year.
The new technical college is envisioned to be the first in Japan to be jointly operated with companies and universities. Kawasaki City and several companies are expected to jointly contribute funds to establish a new school corporation, and it is also planned that faculty members will be dispatched from universities and companies, and joint research projects will be conducted with companies.
The future schedule involves establishing a preparatory committee by 2026 and setting up a preparatory foundation, which will be the main body for the application for establishment, during the 2027 fiscal year. Discussions will proceed regarding departmental structure, curriculum, enrollment capacity, and renovation of school buildings. If the school opens as planned in the 2030 fiscal year, there is expected to be a one-year period of coexistence with Kawasaki Comprehensive Science High School (full-time 3-year program and part-time 4-year program), which is the planned site for the main campus.
If Kawasaki City in Kanagawa Prefecture were to open a technical college, the only prefectures in Japan without a technical college would be Saitama, Yamanashi, and Saga.
