When the Obunsha Education Information Center compiled the 2017 enrollment selection guidelines announced by national and public universities, it became clear that the number of AO entrance exams increased significantly and the reduction in late recruitment was conspicuous.This is believed to be the result of the Central Council for Education's proposal for reforming university entrance exams and the notification of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology requesting a change in the method of selecting enrollees.

各大学の2017年度募集人員を見ると、国立大学は2016年度に比べて前期262人（0.4％）、後期643人（4.1％）、公立大学は前期229人（1.5％）、後期39人（1.1％）のそれぞれ減少となっており、国立大学で後期募集人員の減少ぶりが目立った。公立大学の中期は20人（1.0％）増えている。
The recommendation entrance examination will be held at 76 national universities, 278 faculties, 84 public universities, and 172 faculties. AO entrance exams are scheduled for 53 national universities and 177 faculties. Compared to 2016, the number of recommended entrance exams has increased by 1 university and 2 faculties, and the number of AO entrance exams has increased by 79 universities and 213 faculties.In particular, the increase in AO entrance exams is remarkable.
Shiga University, Kagawa University, Kumamoto University, and Yamaguchi Tokyo University of Science are the four national and public universities that will start the AO entrance exam as a new university.
Looking at the recruitment, the number of recommended admissions increased by 2016 (135%) to 0.7, and the number of AO admissions increased by 1 (9,261%) to 741.This was affected by the significant increase in recruitment of national university AO admissions by 21.0%.
