Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corporation launched the Sports Brain Science (SBS) project in January 2017 with the aim of establishing a new training method for training the "mind" and "skills" of sports. As the first step, with the cooperation of the University of Tokyo Athletic Association Baseball Club and Keio University Baseball Club, we will start full-scale research to clarify the relationship between athletes' performance and the characteristics of brain information processing.

In sports, the mind, technique, and body are important, but the conventional approach of sports science mainly focuses on elucidating the mechanism of "body", and the mechanism of "skill and mind" is scientifically elucidated. There are many parts that are not. Therefore, in the SBS project, we will win by fusing the brain science research approach cultivated over many years at NTT laboratories with the latest information and communication technology to elucidate the unconscious (potential) brain functions of athletes. Aim to train the brain that supports the "mind" and "skill" for the purpose.

As the first step, with the cooperation of the University of Tokyo Athletic Association Baseball Club and Keio University Baseball Club, we will clarify the relationship between the characteristics and performance of brain information processing of athletes with various abilities.

In the research, we used a "smart bullpen" that can simultaneously measure biometric information such as pitcher and batter's performance, muscle activity, and heart rate. Measurement and evaluation will be carried out in parallel to analyze the relationship between individual batter's characteristics and performance in brain information processing. For the evaluation of brain function, we utilize original analysis technology such as body-mind reading technology that deeply reads the state of the mind from the movement of the eyeball.

In addition, by measuring biometric information in actual battles, it is possible to capture changes in heart rate that cannot be explained by changes in the amount of exercise of athletes, and the mental state estimated from these changes and the performance of athletes in the game estimated from video data and score data. Also elucidate the relationship with.

In the future, we will collaborate with athletes of various levels from junior to amateur and professional level to elucidate the potential brain information processing mechanism of athletes, and based on the knowledge gained from research, we will develop the athlete's brain. We aim to establish a new training method that supports training performance improvement.
