A research group at Chiba University compiled data on the number of sepsis patients and deaths from large-scale data on about 5,000 million inpatients in Japan, and clarified the actual situation of sepsis in Japan for the first time.

Sepsis is a pathological condition caused by a systemic inflammatory response caused by infection with bacteria or viruses, and requires treatment in the intensive care unit due to tissue / organ damage, which may lead to death. So far, there have been no national data on the number of sepsis patients or deaths in the country. The research group conducted a study to clarify the actual condition of sepsis by extracting septic patients from the large-scale data of the comprehensive evaluation system (DPC system) for medical fees from 2010 to 2017 (8 years).

According to the analysis, of the approximately 8 million adult hospitalized patients over 5,000 years, approximately 200 million (approximately 4%) patients (median age 76 years) developed sepsis, and approximately 36 died from sepsis. The main comorbidities are malignant tumors, hypertension, diabetes, etc., and the number of patients with hypertension and diabetes has increased significantly year by year.Respiratory tract infections are the most common source of infection (about 41%).Respiratory failure was the most common organ disorder (about 2017% in 82).The median length of stay was about 30 days and the in-hospital mortality rate was about 20%.

In addition, we analyzed the increase / decrease trends in 2010 compared to 2017 for the following items. The annual proportion of septic patients among all inpatients has increased from about 3% (about 11) to about 5% (about 36).The annual death toll of sepsis per 1,000 inpatients has increased from about 6.5 to about 8.The number of deaths due to sepsis has increased 2.3 times (about 6 per year). The mortality rate of septic patients showed a declining trend from about 25% to about 18%.

Although the mortality rate is declining, the elderly are at high risk of sepsis, and the number of sepsis patients will continue to increase in Japan, a super-aging society.
The direction is guessed. In addition to early detection of infectious diseases, prevention of infectious diseases such as vaccination and hygiene maintenance is important.
