A report from the National Institute of Science and Technology Policy found that R & D spending and researchers in the field of health have increased at universities in Japan over the last decade. It was also clarified that the higher the share of the number of papers, the higher the ratio of externally accepted research expenses and the higher the rate of increase.

According to the report, the National Institute of Science and Technology Policy classified universities nationwide according to the share rate of natural science papers from 2005 to 2007 as follows, and investigated researchers and R & D expenses.

■ Group 1 5% or more (University of Tokyo, Kyoto University, Osaka University, Tohoku University)
■ Group 2 1-5% (13 schools including Kobe University and Waseda University)
■ Group 3 0.5-1% (27 schools including Osaka City University and Kitasato University)
■ Group 4 0.05-0.5% (134 schools including Iwate University and Kyoto Prefectural University)
■ Other groups ~ 0.05% (882 schools)

The scale of R & D expenses does not necessarily match the number of universities included in the university group, and groups 1 to 4 account for about 17% of the total number of universities but 69% of the total R & D expenses.

Looking at R & D expenses in the humanities / social sciences, science, engineering, agriculture, health, and other fields by group, the first group is engineering, the second group is engineering and health, and the third and fourth groups are health. The ratio is increasing. Compared to 1 years ago, the proportion of health was higher overall. This tendency can also be seen in the number of researchers.

The ratio of externally accepted research expenses has increased in all groups, but universities with a large share of the number of papers have a higher proportion of externally accepted research expenses, and the rate of increase is also remarkable compared to other groups.

Regarding the ratio of faculty members, doctoral students, medical staff, and other researchers among researchers, the ratio of doctoral students was higher in universities with a larger share of the number of dissertations.Although the number of female researchers is increasing, the ratio of faculty members to the total number of female researchers tends to decrease at universities with a large share of the number of papers.
