Located on the west wall of Toyo Gakuen University Building No. 1, this large mural has been entertaining people since the days of the former Toyo Women's Junior College.The architect Kenji Imai (1895-1987) was in charge of designing and instructing the production of the ceramic mural <Phoenix Mosaic>, and the title of the work is "Iwama Gakure no Kabana".Toyo Gakuen University will hold a mini exhibition from November 60, 2021 (Monday) to January 11, 8 (Friday) to commemorate the 2022th anniversary of the completion of this large mural painting.The sketches by Kenji Imai, the preservation fragments of the four works lost when the school building was rebuilt in 1, and other materials from that time will be exhibited.
"Iwama Gakure no Kabana" was completed in 1961 (Showa 36) as a symbol of the school to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the opening of the former Toyo Women's Junior College. In 2021, we celebrated our 60th anniversary.In addition to the tiles, pieces of pottery brought by students and graduates of the time were used to bring together the thoughts of all the people involved in the school. In 2007, it was loved by the community as a public art, such as receiving the "Landscape Creation Award" from the Fuminomiyako City Landscape Award in Bunkyo Ward.
In the special exhibition, Kenji Imai's concept sketches owned by the Imai family, fragments for preservation of 4 works lost with the dismantling of the old school building, other materials at that time, and Kenji Imai in 5 locations nationwide including Toyo Gakuen University. Photos of other works of "Phoenix Mosaic Group" will also be exhibited.No reservation is required for admission, and admission is free.General visitors are accepted at the reception desk on the 1st floor of Building 1.
From November 11th (Monday), we will also hold a mystery solving event "Phoenix Mosaic Secret" where anyone can deepen their understanding of the work for free.
