In April 2024, Japan Women's University announced a plan to establish the "Faculty of Architectural Design (tentative name)" by making the conventional "Faculty of Home Economics and Housing Department" independent. The name of the two departments of the Faculty of Science ("Department of Mathematical Information Science" and "Department of Chemistry and Life Science") was changed in April 4, and the new faculty was opened (tentative name) in April 2022. With the concept, we aim to strengthen the foundation as a women's comprehensive university by establishing a six-faculty system together with home economics, literature, human society, science, and international culture (tentative name).
The Faculty of Architecture is still established in less than 10 universities nationwide.In addition to architecture, the field of study is wide-ranging, such as design, design, history, and preservation and regeneration of buildings, and the number of students who are aspiring to the Department of Architecture is increasing.
The parent body, "Faculty of Home Economics, Department of Housing" was established in 1948 as the Department of Living Arts, then became independent as the Department of Housing in 1962, and has sent out 5,390 graduates to date.In addition, since introducing a curriculum that enables the acquisition of architect qualifications in 1956, many female architects have been produced.Kazuyo Sejima, a world-famous architect, Rie Higashi, who works on many architectures including Hoshino Resort, and Atelier Bow-Wow, a design office, is a professor at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich. Momoyo and Kasuko Akamatsu, a professor at ETH Zurich and a collaborative member of the Japan Academic Conference.
