In an international collaborative research, a research group at the Graduate School of Hokkaido University proved for the first time in the world that surgery simulation training for beginners improves performance and surgical safety even in actual surgery at a high level of evidence.

This research is an international collaborative research * on the usefulness of surgical simulation training conducted mainly in King's College London, UK. It is a surgical technique that is widely used all over the world.

We recruited doctors who had less than 10 surgical experiences in this procedure and had no experience in simulation training, and randomly divided them into a simulation training intervention group and a conventional on-the-job training (training through actual surgery) group. In the simulation training intervention group, simulation training was conducted after taking a lecture on the knowledge necessary to perform ureteroscopic surgery as an independent surgeon.

At Hokkaido University, ureteroscopic training using a dry box was conducted at the Clinical Simulation Center. After that, more practical training such as extraction of simulated urinary stones using surgical forceps was carried out in the actual operating room.

Information on intraoperative performance and perioperative complications was positively collected in cases operated during the 18-month observation period after training. As a result, it was observed that the performance was improved and all complications and ureteral injury were significantly less in the simulation training intervention group.

The results of this time have a great influence on the surgical education methods in other surgical methods, and it is expected that simulation training will become widespread.

* Universities and practitioners from Japan, the United Kingdom, the United States, China, Austria, Canada, Germany, Greece, Switzerland, and Turkey participate.
