Research teams at National Defense Medical College, Nara Medical University, and Saitama Medical University have revealed through animal experiments that the administration of artificial red blood cells can save lives in cases of critical massive bleeding during delivery as an application example of artificial red blood cells. I made it.

Delivery-related, life-threatening bleeding occurs in 250 in 300-1 pregnant women.Massive bleeding that requires blood transfusion "Observation critical bleeding" requires rapid and sufficient transfusion of red blood cells, but nearly 8% of clinics that handle delivery cannot prepare blood transfusions in advance. There are still cases of delayed treatment and cardiac arrest during transport to a large hospital.

The research team has developed a well-preserved artificial red blood cell that is effective for two years at room temperature, and is investigating whether it can be used to save the life of a case of massive bleeding during labor. This time, when artificial red blood cells were administered to a rabbit that had a large amount of bleeding from the pregnant uterus and was about to give birth, a life-saving effect almost equivalent to that of red blood cell transfusion was obtained. Then, as a more realistic model, after a caesarean section was performed on a pregnant rabbit, when a large amount of bleeding from the uterus was performed, only plasma substitute was administered for the first 2 minutes, followed by artificial red blood cells. As a result, 30 out of 6 birds were able to survive even after 10 hours, and the effect was similar to the transfusion of red blood cells and plasma components in which all the birds survived.

In the future, it will be necessary to examine the safety and efficacy in detail, but artificial red blood cells have the advantage of being highly conserved and can be administered regardless of blood type, and are equipped for massive bleeding during labor, which is highly urgent. It could be a useful treatment before being transported to a large, well-equipped hospital. It is expected that administration of artificial erythrocytes will be effective in various situations where it is difficult to procure blood for transfusion, including sudden massive bleeding during labor.
