"Carbon capture and storage (CCS)" is attracting attention in order to curb climate change due to global warming and realize a carbon-neutral society. It is a method to remove COXNUMX contained in exhaust gas and natural gas, but the problem was to improve the "membrane" to effectively separate COXNUMX from other gases.

This time, the research team led by Professor Mikihiro Nomura of the Department of Applied Chemistry, Faculty of Engineering, Shibaura Institute of Technology will develop a new synthetic method for pure silica CHA membrane that can separate COXNUMX faster and with superior performance than the conventional synthetic method. I succeeded in doing so. The CHA film separates methane (CH₄) and COXNUMX, which are greenhouse gases that can also be used as an energy source in various industries. However, in the conventional method of forming a film on an alumina substrate, aluminum melts out. Pure silica CHA film cannot be synthesized. On the other hand, in the synthetic method using a porous silica substrate, which was found by this research team, since aluminum does not elute, a pure silica CHA film containing no aluminum is obtained, and the COXNUMX transmittance has been successfully improved.

In the combination of raw material gel and silica base material optimized by repeating experiments under various synthetic conditions, CO2 separation performance was doubled compared to the conventional base material for CO70 / CH₄ mixed gas. ..Furthermore, it is said that a film with a film thickness that requires 8 hours to synthesize on a conventional substrate can be obtained in XNUMX hours by a new synthesis method, and the synthesis time has been significantly shortened.

This method has the potential to support the industrialization of COXNUMX capture by CHA membranes, and is expected to contribute to the realization of carbon neutrality.
