A research group led by Mr. Kosuke Yano (3rd year doctoral student) of Rikkyo University Graduate School has created a new scale that improves the susceptibility to environmental stimuli and the conventional scale for measuring "environmental sensitivity".It was shown that the "sensory processing sensitivity" of Japanese adults can be appropriately measured.

The susceptibility to various environmental stimuli in daily life and the susceptibility to reaction differ from person to person, and this individual difference is explained by the concept of "environmental sensitivity".Individual differences in environmental sensitivity can be grasped by measuring various genes and neurophysiological aspects, but in particular, the aspect related to relatively stable temperament and personality characteristics within an individual is called "sensory processing sensitivity".Sensory processing sensitivity can be easily measured mainly by the self-reporting psychological scale "HSP (Highly Sensitive Person) Scale", but the measurement accuracy was insufficient.

This time, the research group conducted four studies (surveys and experiments) on 2,388 Japanese adults, and created an improved version of the highly accurate HSP scale Japanese version "HSP-J4".There are three main characteristics, and the following tendencies were observed. (10) A person with a high score of HSP-J3 at a certain point has a high score even after about 1 months (a person with a low score has a low score even after 10 months). (2) The higher the score of HSP-J2, the higher the personality traits related to negative emotions (neuroticism, etc.) and the lower the personality traits related to positive emotions (extroversion, etc.). (2) In an experiment of watching a video of about 10 minutes that evokes positive emotions, the higher the score of HSP-J3, the higher the positive emotions before and after watching, but the lower the score, the more such a change. Was not confirmed.

The above results are in agreement with the leading theories in this area and the research findings reported at home and abroad. The score distribution of HSP-J10 reflects individual differences in susceptibility to some extent.
