The impression that "farmers are long-lived and energetic" is often mentioned internationally. In April 2016, the Institute for Sustainable Food, Agriculture, and Biotechnology of the Waseda University Priority Area Research Organization, which took a concrete proof of this point, decided to start agriculture based on the medical cost data of the medical insurance system for the elderly. The research results show that the medical expenses of the late-stage elderly who are engaged are about 4% less than those of other late-stage elderly. The significance of confirming such a clear difference is great, and this time, a study was conducted to clarify the difference between farmers and non-farmers more accurately.

As a new research method, we conducted a questionnaire with survey items such as the age at the time of death of a family member who died after XNUMX, the type of work before the death, and the age at the time of quitting work.As a result of the tabulation, it became clear that self-employed farmers have an outstanding longevity, long working periods, and shorter life expectancy after retirement than non-farmers.

From this result, it is considered that the long life expectancy of self-employed farmers is contributed by their long-term engagement in agriculture. In addition, if healthy life expectancy is defined as the age from self-employed agriculture to retirement, it can be said that the characteristic of so-called pin-pin korori, which is the difference between the age of death and healthy life expectancy, is short.

In the future, along with medical professionals and sports science researchers, farmers will work to clarify which parts of farmers'actual work and activities lead to longevity and what lifestyles lead to health maintenance. It is said that the research will be developed by conducting interview surveys and observing daily life.
