A research group at the University of Tsukuba and others combined a high-performance human calorimeter with statistical methods to reveal for the first time in the world that energy metabolism is changing under the influence of the passage of time after falling asleep and each sleep stage. bottom.

Epidemiological studies to date have pointed out that sleep deprivation is associated with the development of metabolic disorders and obesity.Although there are several previous studies on what kind of energy metabolism is performed during sleep, no consensus results were obtained due to the difference in the measurement method of metabolism and the small number of samples.

This time, the group performed sleep measurement by EEG and metabolism measurement using a high-performance human calorimeter in 29 subjects. As a result of statistical analysis by adjusting the influence of each factor such as sleep time and sleep stage, it became clear that energy expenditure and carbohydrate oxidation amount decreased sharply immediately after falling asleep and increased immediately before waking up. ..The group says that the phenomenon of metabolic activity at dawn, the most starving of the day, is a very interesting finding. On the other hand, the amount of lipid oxidation increased in the first half of sleep and decreased in the second half.

In this way, the actual state of energy metabolism during sleep, which has been considered difficult to calculate accurately, has been clarified for the first time in the world. If the mechanism that connects sleep and metabolism is further elucidated in the future, it is expected that regulation of sleep can be expected to prevent or improve obesity and diabetes.
