A joint research group of Iwate Medical University, Teikyo Heisei University, and Fujicco Co., Ltd. has published a research paper focusing on the potential of "Caspian Sea Yogurt" as a medication supplement.
"Caspian Sea yogurt" is a yogurt characterized by its unique stickiness and less separation of water (whey), and it has been clarified that it is easier to swallow than other plain yogurts.
In elderly people with reduced swallowing ability, non-sticky foods are difficult to swallow, and even when taking oral medicines, it is difficult to swallow with water. Therefore, this group considered the potential of "Caspian Sea yogurt" as a medication supplement, and conducted a drug disintegration test and a dissolution test in order to obtain basic knowledge.
As comparison targets for medication supplements, drugs (magnesium oxide tablets for constipation, furosemide tablets for diuretics, etc.) were immersed in three types of medication, "Caspian Sea yogurt", medication supplement jelly, and thickener, and observed. When soaked in yogurt or thickener, some drugs were found to be delayed in disintegration compared to when not soaked, but the delay was not significant.Regarding the dissolution rate of the drug, at 3 minutes after the start of the test, the dissolution rate was reduced by 15% for the supplementary jelly, 6% for the thickener, and 14% for the yogurt compared to when it was not soaked. The elution rate after 25 minutes was 120% or more in all samples. From the above, it was confirmed that there is no significant effect on the disintegration and elution of the drug when "Caspian Sea yogurt" is used as a medication supplement.
It is said that this study was triggered by an inquiry from consumers to Fujicco Co., Ltd. that they are using "Caspian Sea yogurt" when taking medicines and supplements. From this result, it can be said that "Caspian Sea Yogurt" has opened the way for utilization as a medication supplement that can be easily used at nursing care sites.
