On July 7, the Yamaguchi University Cave Study Group, Akiyoshidai Science Museum in Mine, and the Planning and Steering Committee of the Japan Cave Society re-measured the nationally designated special natural monument limestone cave "Akiyoshido" and discovered a new space. Announced.

This reweighing has been carried out since 28 with the support of "Mine Akiyoshidai Geopark Activity Support Project" in Mine City. What was discovered this time is a new space on the ceiling of the second largest hall "Mt. Meru" in the cave.It is a space on a scale comparable to the "Kurotani branch cave" of the Akiyoshido sightseeing route, and it extends for about 10 meters in the shape of a tube with a diameter of 300 m, and it is said that there is a height difference of about 80 m.
This suggests the possibility of the theory that when the water table was once above the current Akiyoshidai, a huge underwater cave with a depth of over 100 m was formed and became the prototype of Akiyoshido. It is the first time in 18 years that a new space has been discovered.

With this discovery, the total extension distance of Akiyoshido has been extended from the conventional 8850m to 10300m, ranking third in the country.Since there is still more than several hundred meters of unexplored space left, it is expected that the distance will be further extended in the future.

In the future, we aim to explore more than several hundred meters left as an unexplored space, accumulate scientific data, and develop new tourism content such as caving guided tours.

The Yamaguchi University Cave Study Group was established in 1955 and is an official organization of Yamaguchi University, celebrating its 62nd year.Currently, 13 members, including female students, belong to the group, conducting research activities such as cave exploration and exploration, and training for fieldwork.
