A research group at the Faculty of Pharmacy, Kinki University has succeeded in developing an analyzer that is inexpensive, compact, and can detect cyanide compounds quickly and easily.

Cyanide compounds such as potassium cyanide are highly toxic and may be used in murders and suicides. Therefore, in addition to the need for rapid measurement in the investigation of incidents and accidents, the field of life-saving medicine also requires fast and accurate quantitative analysis for the purpose of saving lives. However, the conventional detection method has a problem that it is necessary to use a large and expensive device, while the detection method using a simple kit also has a problem that the accuracy is insufficient.

Against this background, the analyzer newly developed by this group is a palm-sized detector that can detect cyanide compounds quickly and easily with high sensitivity. In this device, a solution containing a cyanide compound is treated with an acid to generate hydrocyanic acid gas, which is reacted with a test strip impregnated with an NDA-taurine-boric acid mixed solution.By measuring the luminous intensity of the fluorescent substance generated on the test paper, the concentration of the cyanide compound can be measured.

The concentration of cyanide compound that can be detected is as wide as 1 to 100 μM or more, and it is possible to detect a very small amount of cyanide compound without using a large device.Due to its small size, it can be easily carried to the scene of an incident or accident and analyzed accurately. In addition, it can be manufactured at a low price of 2 yen or less.

In addition to being expected to be used in future investigations and medical sites to detect cyanide compounds, it is expected to be widely used because it can be applied to drug poisons other than cyanide compounds by changing the reagent.
