Niigata University of Health and Welfare opened the Institute for Natural Anthropology, which will be an on-campus institute, and held an opening ceremony in the GA Building 403 Anatomy Training Room. While promoting research on anthropology centered on osteology, we will actively undertake the appraisal of human bones and forensic identification excavated at archaeological sites in cooperation with local governments and police.

Professor Takashi Nara of the Faculty of Rehabilitation was appointed as the director of the Institute of Natural Anthropology, and Associate Professor Sumiaki Sawada of the Faculty of Rehabilitation, Lecturer Yasuo Hagiwara, Assistant Professor Fumiko Saeki, and Assistant Professor Aiko Sasou were appointed as researchers.

While the shortage of forensic researchers has emerged as an issue at medical universities, it is also a problem that many anatomy teachers cannot be trained on their own.At Niigata University of Health and Welfare, five faculty members specializing in anthropology and anatomy are enrolled, and the educational system is in place, so we have set up a research institute in the field of anthropology, which is rare nationwide.

At the opening ceremony, the human bones of the Jomon period, about 2021 years ago, excavated at the Dobashi site in Agano City, Niigata Prefecture by Director Nara, and the restoration of the lord of the Makino clan of the Edo period, Seishitsu (honzuma). Explained the exhibition materials on campus such as models."The environment in which we can study anthropology is very limited. The existence of a research institute in the field of anthropology is likely to be a unique feature," said Nara.
