The Tohoku University Tohoku Medical Megabank Project will start selling biological samples and information for about 23,000 people whose genotypes have been determined by analysis using SNP arrays.

The Tohoku Medical Megabank Project was planned as a reconstruction project from the Great East Japan Earthquake, with the Tohoku University Tohoku Medical Megabank Organization and the Iwate Medical University Iwate Tohoku Medical Megabank Organization as the main business entities, with the goal of participating 15 people. We are conducting a long-term health survey. In addition, we are constructing a biobank that integrates biological samples entrusted to us in long-term health surveys with medical information.Under the plan, data sales of 29 people have already been carried out since February 2, but this time the scale has been expanded more than twice in terms of number of people and about 1 times in terms of data scale.Japanese academic research institutes (non-profit organizations) and researchers belonging to research institutes such as companies whose head office is in Japan can apply for the sale.

With this expansion of sales, the Tohoku Medical Megabank Project is an unprecedented large-scale cohort survey in Japan (to follow a specific population of people over a period of time and elucidate the relationship between environment / heredity and disease. We will start providing information such as genomic information and lifestyle in the survey). This is expected to make dramatic progress in research such as elucidating the causes of diseases that occur when genetic factors and environmental factors, which have been difficult until now, are intricately intertwined.
