The Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST) has decided on five new projects in 2017 for the "University-Initiated Industry Creation Program (START)" that supports the commercialization of high-potential technologies such as universities.
The University-Initiated New Industry Creation Program (START) has been undertaken since 2012 based on the current situation in which business development in new markets through university-originated ventures, etc. has not been sufficiently carried out regarding basic research results of Japanese universities, etc. A system established by the Ministry and transferred to the Japan Science and Technology Agency from FY2015.
At START, we aim to create new industries and develop new markets through the commercialization of high-potential technologies, etc., by utilizing human resources (business promoter) units with commercialization know-how.By combining public funds and private-sector commercialization know-how from the pre-entrepreneurial stage of ventures from universities, etc., while building business strategies and intellectual property strategies, commercialization of technologies with high potential that existing companies cannot bear risks We will support the challenge to.
START includes the "business promoter support type" that supports the commercialization of technology seeds of universities, etc., such as the discovery of technology seeds performed by business promoters, and the market and exits of universities, etc. under the project management of business promoters. There are two types of "project support type" that support research and development projects aimed at commercialization with an eye on it.
This time, we decided on a new "project support type" project that was selected from 2017 applications submitted between January 1th and May 17th, 5, narrowed down by the business promoter and examined by the committee. 17 cases. In the future, research and development will start as soon as conditions such as contracts with each project are met.
