Yokohama National University and BB Soft Service Corp. (hereinafter referred to as "BBSS") of SoftBank Group released the IoT cyber threat analysis report in August, and reported that the number of attacks targeting IoT devices increased sharply in August.
This report is based on a joint research project started by Yokohama National University and BBSS in June 2017.We observe and analyze cyber security threats targeting the rapidly increasing number of IoT devices, and report the situation on a monthly basis.
According to the report, the number of access hosts and attack hosts from Mexico surged in August. As a result of investigating the equipment types of the observed host group, a feature that seems to be from a certain router product that was not observed at all was confirmed in July.It is expected that the router product, which is widely used in Mexico, has been hijacked by a cyber attack and manipulated by an attacker to attack the outside.
In terms of the number of attack hosts by country, Mexico, which was 7th in July, had the highest number, accounting for a quarter of the total. As mentioned above, it is presumed that many network devices used in Mexico were infected with the IoT virus. China, Brazil, India, Russia, etc. follow in second place and below. In total, attacks were observed from 14 countries.
In this research project, Yokohama National University and BBSS will develop methods and technologies to grasp the wonders of IoT devices that are difficult to see due to the sophistication of techniques, and to ensure safety. There is.To that end, we will continue to observe cyber attacks targeting IoT devices, and disseminate information such as observation data and research results to help raise awareness of the safety of network-connected devices.
