On September 2017, 9, at the Foreign Correspondents'Association of Japan (FCCJ) in Tokyo, there was an award ceremony for the Foreign Correspondents' Association Journalism Scholarship "The Swadesh DeRoy Scholarship 11", Pen (article) , Photo (photo), Video (video), Tohoku University international students won the first prize in all three categories.
The Foreign Correspondents' Association of Japan (FCCJ) was founded in 1945 by journalists and photographers working for newspapers, news agencies, magazines, and radio stations, who arrived in Japan at the end of the Pacific War.The FCCJ-sponsored "The Swadesh DeRoy Scholarship" is a contest held to award and support students who want to become journalists.Students from all over Japan are invited to work in three categories on different topics every year, and the winners are decided after being selected by veteran journalists in newspapers, magazines, television, and photojournalism.
The topic for 2017 is “Youth Trends in Changing Japan”. International students from Tohoku University won the first prize in each of the Pen (article), Photo (photo), and Video (video) categories. The first place in the Video category is Nguyen Chi Long (from Vietnam), a second-year student at the Graduate School of Medicine, Tohoku University, who created a work that introduced "Tohoku" through the eyes of international students.
Tohoku University Faculty of Science International Bachelor's Course (Advanced Molecular Chemistry) 1nd year Trishit Banerjee (from India) and Keio University Jennifer Lisa Wooden ranked first in the Pen category. Second place is Waseda University Marina Yoshimura. The first place in the Photo category was Fuad Ikwanda (from Indonesia), a second-year student in the International Bachelor's Degree Course (IMAC-G), Graduate School of Engineering, Tohoku University, and Nonoka Aida, Chuo University.
