At the international contest "COLIEE 2022", which competes for automatic answers to Japanese judicial examinations, the artificial intelligence automatic answering machine created by the research group of Associate Professor Yoshinobu Kano of the Faculty of Informatics, Shizuoka University achieved the highest correct answer rate.It will be announced at "JURISIN 1", an international workshop on legal informatics held at the Kyoto International Conference Center in Kyoto City.

According to Shizuoka University, this automatic answering machine has created an answering machine using a large-scale deep language model, which has become mainstream in recent years, and an answering machine with a classic natural language processing function, and is a system that makes the best use of the advantages of each. The final answer was derived by mixing. As a result, the highest percentage of correct answers among the participants was obtained in the COLIEE2022 Civil Code short answer formula.

Natural language processing, which deals with human language, is said to be the last frontier in the field of artificial intelligence that the world is competing with.Among them, legal texts are considered to be a challenging field that requires logic in addition to specialized knowledge, but it is expected to be put into practical use to support the automation of the court process.

Based on this result, the research group of Associate Professor Kano and others will proceed with new problem setting and evaluation design toward the development of "explainable artificial intelligence" that can show the grounds and reasons.Associate Professor Kano said, "It is the result of the efforts of successive laboratory members that we have achieved the top position. We will continue to aim for the realization of artificial intelligence that understands the law."
