Professor Kazuo Tsubota and Professor Kazuno Negishi of the Department of Ophthalmology, Keio University School of Medicine have discovered that violet light (purple light) may suppress the progression of myopia in adults with severe myopia.

Severe myopia is listed as the fourth cause of blindness (visual impairment level 1) in Japan (Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare report), and the risk of blindness is extremely high. However, for adult patients with severe myopia, there is currently no effective method for suppressing the progression of myopia. The axial length is the depth of the eye, and it is thought that myopia progresses mainly by extending the axial length.
The research group has already reported that violet light (visible light with a wavelength of 360 to 400 nm) contained in natural light may be effective in suppressing axial length elongation in young people (13 to 18 years old) (2016). December of the year).

This time, we performed phakic intraocular lens insertion, which is one of the refractive surgery, for 1 adult patients with severe myopia.Eleven of them were in the group with lenses that hardly transmit violet light, and 26 were in the group with lenses that transmit.
Over the next five years, we examined the progression of myopia and investigated the differences between the two lens types. As a result, it was shown that the group in which the lens transmitting the violet light was inserted had a smaller change in the axial length and tended to suppress the progression of myopia.
The differences were compared and examined from various aspects such as higher-order aberrations, residual astigmatism, spectral transmittance of the phakic intraocular lens, and off-axis aberration simulation using a model eye.In conclusion, it was shown that the difference in the transmittance of violet light may be effective in suppressing the axial length extension of the adult mysterious eye.

Based on the results of this research, violet light is expected to play a part in the prevention of blindness by suppressing the extension of the axial length of not only young people but also adults with severe myopia.
