The Research Institute for Disaster Prevention Science and Technology, the Information and Communication Research Organization, the Secretariat for Science, Technology and Innovation Promotion, Nagoya University, Fukuoka University, the Meteorological Research Institute of the Japan Meteorological Agency, and the Japan Antenna research group have been working on linear precipitation, which occurs frequently in summer in western Japan. In order to predict the zone, we started water vapor observation in Kyushu. While elucidating the mechanism of occurrence, we aim to commercialize the water vapor observation data distribution service to the private sector.
According to the Cabinet Office, the research group is a water vapor rider that observes scattered light by water vapor molecules with laser light in the Nomozaki district of Nagasaki City, Nagasaki Prefecture, and Shimokane Island of Satsuma Kawauchi City, Kagoshima Prefecture. A microwave radiator capable of observing the total amount of water vapor in the sky and terrestrial digital water vapor observation equipment were installed in cities, etc., and full-scale observation began in June.
Furthermore, from July, the observation system will be strengthened, and a demonstration experiment will be conducted jointly with 7 local governments in Kyushu with the aim of improving the accuracy of linear precipitation zone prediction.
The linear precipitation zone is a group of clouds in which developed cumulonimbus clouds occur one after another, and heavy rain continues for several hours or more, causing flooding of rivers and sediment-related disasters. In order to prevent disasters, it is essential to establish a technique to accurately predict rainfall up to several hours ahead.
For this reason, the National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Prevention would like to provide the data obtained from this observation to universities and research institutes to help clarify the mechanism of linear precipitation zone generation.Furthermore, we will support the commercialization of terrestrial digital water vapor observation data as a distribution service by Nippon Antenna.
