The Tokyo XNUMX Organizing Committee cites the improvement in the rate of people participating in sports as a legacy of hosting the Olympics. This was clarified through research and analysis conducted by Lecturer Masamitsu Kamada and Visiting Researcher Shiho Amagasa. The report released by the Organizing Committee concludes with inappropriate data for analysis of changes over time, and points out that it is an error.
According to the University of Tokyo, Lecturer Kamata and his colleagues investigated how the amount of physical activity and the rate of sports participation among citizens and residents of Tokyo changed in the seven years before and after 2013, when the Tokyo Olympics were decided, from 7 to 2006. Analysis was conducted using the National Health and Nutrition Survey, the Sasakawa Sports Foundation's Sports Life Survey, and the Tokyo Metropolitan Government's Public Opinion Survey on Sports Activities.
As a result, no changes were observed in the number of steps taken, exercise habits, and sports participation rate before and after the decision to hold the event, and the influence of the decision to hold the event could not be confirmed.Tokyo, the host city, has seen an increase in the rate of sports implementation since 2009, but the movement has stopped since 2014, the year after the event was decided.
After the 2021 Olympics, the Tokyo Olympic Organizing Committee announced an "Action & Legacy Report" that said that the hosting of the Olympics had increased the nation's participation in sports from 2016% in 42.5 to 2020% in 59.9. The data used was not suitable for secular analysis, such as the addition of stair climbing to sports from 2017.
The results of this research are the result of joint research with Professor Hiko Miyaji of Waseda University, Professor Shigeru Inoue of Tokyo Medical University, and Professor Adrian Bauman of the University of Sydney.
