The University of Tsukuba will soon issue a university bond called the “University of Tsukuba Social Value Creation Bond.”The amount is 200 billion yen, and the redemption period is 40 years. It will be a sustainability bond that will be used for the development of a large-scale research facility to be built in Tsukuba City, Ibaraki Prefecture.This is the third issue of university bonds following the University of Tokyo and Osaka University.

 According to the University of Tsukuba, the interest rate on the university bond is 1.619% per annum, with an issue date of October 10 and a redemption date of March 19, 2062.Nomura Securities, Daiwa Securities, and Mitsubishi UFJ Morgan Stanley Securities are the underwriters, and Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation is the trustee of the offering.It is rated AA+ by Rating and Investment Information Center and AAA by Japan Credit Rating Agency.

 Based on the basic guidelines for 4 formulated in April, the University of Tsukuba will allocate the funds raised to the development costs of large-scale research facilities and sports complexes to be built in Tsukuba City.Large-scale research facilities are scheduled to be built by 2030.

 National university corporations used to be able to issue bonds only to facilities that could directly generate income, but in response to the 2020 revision of the government ordinance, the requirements were eased, and the University of Tokyo and Osaka University issued the bonds.

 Sustainability bonds are issued to businesses addressing both environmental and social issues based on guidelines formulated by the International Capital Market Association.This is the second publication in Japan after Osaka University.
