Tohoku University has clarified that the inequality related to the motion of the micro scale called "quantum velocity limit" is a universal inequality even in the collective phenomenon on the macro scale that we usually see. This achievement was made by Ms. Mika Okuyama of Tokyo Institute of Technology and Associate Professor Masayuki Ozeki of Tohoku University.
In contrast to Newtonian mechanics, which describes familiar physical phenomena, a different principle called quantum mechanics is established on a microscale such as atoms and molecules. This is because the property developed on the micro scale called the uncertainty principle is involved in the formation of quantum mechanics.
It has been known that there is a limit called "quantum velocity limit" in the motion on a micro scale according to this quantum mechanics. This quantum velocity limit has long been a phenomenon peculiar to quantum mechanics, and it was believed that such a motion limit exists only on a micro scale.
In this study, by reviewing the basics of quantum mechanics, the fundamental origin of the quantum velocity limit is not in the uncertainty principle that causes the phenomenon peculiar to quantum mechanics, but is widely established in the equation of motion that describes various phenomena. It was revealed that it was a thing. As a result, we have found various velocity limits in various equations that describe the behavior of collective phenomena on a macro scale.
It is expected that the results of this research will lead to the elucidation of universal principles related to various movements. The results of this research were published in the Journal of Physical Review Letters (February 2018, 2) published by the American Physical Society.
