The ability to detect regular relationships between one's actions and external stimuli, that is, connections between one's own movements and their consequences, is called ``perception of regularity of actions and consequences''.It turns out that the perception of regularity of actions and consequences already exists in infancy. For example, a 9- to 12-week-old baby tied to an overhead mobile with a silk cord around her ankle will find that when she moves her leg, the mobile will move, which can be a pleasant reward, making her legs more active. keep active.

In this way, typically developing infants are equipped with perception of action-result regularity even in the early postnatal development period, but it is unclear whether it remains constant from infancy to adolescence or whether it changes developmentally. It wasn't.

Associate Professor Satoshi Nobusako of the Center for Neurorehabilitation Research at Kio University, in collaboration with Specially Appointed Associate Professor Wen Wen of the University of Tokyo and Professor Akio Nakai of Mukogawa Women's University, conducted a study on behavior-results in 5 to 16-year-olds. We investigated the developmental changes in perceptual sensitivity to regularity in children.

The 5 children aged 16 to 200 who participated in the study worked on an action-result regularity detection task developed by Designated Associate Professor Wen Wen. Perceptual sensitivity was assessed.

As a result, it was found that 9-16 year-olds have higher perceptual sensitivity to regularity than 5-6-year-olds, and 5-6 year-olds are still immature in perceiving action-result regularity. In addition, the perceptual sensitivity to regularity increased with increasing age at ages 5-16.In addition, children with low levels of fine motor skills (manual dexterity), measured at the time of the experiment, were found to be less sensitive to the perception of regularity than those with moderate-to-high scores. .

This study revealed for the first time that perceptual sensitivity to the regularity of action-results develops from infancy to adolescence. In the future, it is necessary to elucidate changes in the perception of action-result regularity throughout human life, including adulthood and old age. And it is necessary to clarify the relationship between the perceptual sensitivity of the regularity of action-result.
