In the 2018 World University Rankings by Major, compiled by QS Quacquarelli Symonds Limited (QS), a UK higher education evaluation institution, the University of Tokyo was ranked among the top 5 in the world in five fields including contemporary languages.The highest ranks earned by Japanese universities were 10th at Kyoto University in Engineering-Chemistry and Tokyo Medical and Dental University in Dentistry.
According to QS, the University of Tokyo ranked 8th in chemistry, 9th in engineering-mechanical and physics-astronomy, and 10th in engineering-chemistry, in addition to modern language.However, three fields such as social policy and management have fallen from the previous year's 3 leaders.It ranks in 10 of the 48 fields, of which 41 are in the top 36.
Only one department each of Kyoto University and Tokyo Medical and Dental University is in the top 10 other than the University of Tokyo.Kyoto University ranked in the top 1 in 20 fields, one less than the previous year.Tokyo Medical and Dental University was ranked 1rd in dentistry the previous year, but has dropped two places.
Only 20 fields, five less than the previous year, were among the top 5 Japanese universities.In Asian countries, it is second only to Singapore's 27 fields, ahead of China's 34 fields, Hong Kong's 2 fields, and South Korea's 25 fields.However, QS says that the ranking of Japanese universities has declined relatively.
In the world ranking of the number of fields in the top 10 rankings, the University of Cambridge in the United Kingdom is the top in 37 fields. Second place is Oxford University in the UK with 2 fields.Below, all of them were followed by the University of California, Berkeley, Harvard University in 35 fields each, and Stanford University in 34 fields.
