A research group led by Associate Professor Atsushi Fukuhara and Assistant Professor Yosuke Okuno of the Graduate School of Medicine, Osaka University has revealed that it induces healthy obesity by suppressing oxidative stress in adipose tissue.

Obesity is caused by overeating and lack of exercise. Obesity includes morbid obesity with insulin resistance and metabolic disorders, and healthy obesity without these. The molecular mechanism that distinguishes the two has been unknown.Oxidative stress was known to increase in obese adipose tissue, but its role was unclear.

This time, the group created genetically modified mice that removed or increased oxidative stress specifically in adipose tissue, and analyzed each of them.As a result, by removing adipose tissue oxidative stress, the amount of adipose tissue increased, while the accumulation of fat in the liver decreased, and insulin resistance was improved. In other words, it was revealed that it induces healthy obesity.Conversely, increasing adipose tissue oxidative stress reduces the amount of adipose tissue while increasing fat accumulation in the liver and exacerbating insulin resistance. In other words, it was revealed that it induces pathological obesity.

In the future, by targeting oxidative stress in adipose tissue, it is expected to induce healthy lipid accumulation and lead to the treatment of obesity type 2 diabetes and the like.

The "true value" of each person becomes the "evolution" of Osaka University. To a university that lives in the community and extends to the world

Osaka University is a research-based university with 11 faculties and 23 departments. Since its founding in 1931, with the motto of "living in the region and extending to the world," we have created an outstanding "foundation" and "power" that weaves advanced education and research capabilities, the harmony of faculty and staff, and the weight of tradition and the advantage of Osaka.
