Kunitachi College of Music will start a new course "Music Data Science Course" from April 2023 to analyze music by incorporating scientific methods centered on data science.

At Kunitachi College of Music, in addition to traditional music performance and creative activities, research and education have been conducted on the relationship between the latest technology and music. The Department of Performance and Creation, which pursues artistic expression using computers, offers an interdisciplinary study that integrates programming, recording, and creative techniques. At the museum, we continue to investigate and research musical instruments, including scientific approaches.

The "Music Data Science Course" to be offered this time is a unique program of Kunitachi College of Music that can be taken from the third year.Focusing on music, we will work on research to create a new music culture while incorporating data science methods that have traditionally been handled by human resources who have received specialized education in science such as engineering departments.

Until now, in the field of data science, especially with regard to music, there have not always been enough human resources who can combine musical and emotional expertise with logical underpinnings, and research continues to be difficult to progress. On the other hand, music colleges have specialized knowledge that allows them to logically express emotional aspects of music in words, but they lack an environment where they can acquire knowledge of data analysis and mathematical science, and they are aware of the possibilities of new research. sometimes not.By allowing students with specialized knowledge of music, which takes a long time to acquire, to acquire basic knowledge of mathematical data science, they will be able to obtain data with musical backing that could not be achieved in research at music universities. It is expected to open up the research field of analysis.

In addition, by dealing with "performance science" that analyzes the performance itself by scientific methods, we will study how to move the body for a comfortable performance and how to move the body for efficient performance.

In the "Music Data Science Course," any student interested in data science and scientific analysis methods can take the course, regardless of their major or specialization, if they pass the course selection test.Course subjects include basic knowledge of AI (artificial intelligence), development of a music recommendation system using machine learning functions, writing a graduation thesis, and internship at a company in the fourth year.

Currently, research using data science methods is already underway at the Graduate School of Kunitachi College of Music, and some students are aiming to build a system that can judge the quality of musical instrument reeds using AI.We aim to develop human resources based on the university's basic philosophy of "contributing to the development of music culture in Japan and around the world" by linking data science and music, opening up a new culture of music with technology.
