The University of Tokyo Graduate School of Education Center for Practical Policy for Development and Childcare (Cedep) and Benesse Institute for Education are jointly promoting a research project * on "Life and Raising of Infants".This time, we announced the results of the first survey conducted in 2017.

The survey analyzed 0 mothers and 6 fathers with children from 1 years and 5 months to 2,975 year and 2,624 months. 0% of mothers and 1% of fathers of 74.1 to 68.8 year olds want to have more children. However, 28.6% of mothers and 22.3% of fathers answered, "I want more, but it is difficult."

The reasons for those who answered "I want more, but it is difficult" are 1st "because it costs money to raise children and education" (81.4% for mothers, 81.3% for fathers) and 2nd "because the physical burden of raising children is heavy". (Mother 49.9%, Father 36.0%), 3rd place "Because it is difficult to balance childcare and work" (Mother 37.4%, Father 26.4%).Approximately 800% of households with an annual income of 7 million yen or more cited it because of cost. These results indicate that reducing financial anxiety is most needed to ensure that individuals have the desired number of children.

In addition, the percentage of households that "plan to have" one or more children is higher in households that help each other as a couple, with the support of grandparents, and with the support of the community. ..Of the families that are “team-raising” to help each other as a couple, 1% of the families have “2 hours or more” for their father's child-rearing on weekdays. As a feature, it was also found that the father works in a workplace where it is easy to balance work and child-rearing, such as "there is an atmosphere that makes it easy to return on time".

* The purpose of the "Infant Life and Raising" research project is to clarify the influence of the process of child growth and the way parents are involved through a multi-year continuous survey of the same parent and child.
