Hidenori Watanabe's laboratory at the University of Tokyo Graduate School of Interdisciplinary Information Studies/Graduate School of Interdisciplinary Information Studies established the War Damage and Disaster Digital Archive Fund on the occasion of the 12th anniversary of the Great East Japan Earthquake.Collecting donations from a wide range of people, the fund will inherit the records of disasters that Japan suffered during the Pacific War, such as the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki and the Great East Japan Earthquake.
According to the University of Tokyo, the aim of the War Damage and Disaster Digital Archive Fund is to share the memories of victims with society as a whole and pass them on to future generations.The Watanabe Laboratory has been operating a digital archive series on themes such as the atomic bombing and the Great East Japan Earthquake since the 2010s.
Therefore, in addition to securing a sustainable budget with the fund, we will develop an archive system that is easier to use by incorporating advanced technologies such as virtual reality and artificial intelligence.The newly constructed digital archive will transmit the record of the disaster to the whole world, and together with the younger generation will promote activities to learn from the past and apply it to the future.
As of the 12th, the fund has received 31 donations totaling 62 yen.Professor Hidenori Watanabe commented on the University of Tokyo website, "I would like to ask for your support for the realization of a peaceful and powerful world that stands up to war damage and disasters."
