Associate Professor Minoru Kuribayashi of Okayama University and students in the first term doctoral course of the Graduate School of Science and Technology at Okayama University have developed a web application that allows anyone to easily convert images such as photos into QR codes.

The announced web application "Design QRcode Generator" does not require environment settings, and anyone can use it easily and intuitively. Upload an image on a web browser, use the mouse to specify the location and size of the QR code, enter the information data you want to store, and click the create button to display the created design QR code. The design QR code can be read with a normal 2D barcode reader.

In conventional application development, it was necessary to run the program code on a dedicated terminal, and it was complicated to specify the location and size of the input image to be converted into a QR code. In addition to eliminating the need to use a mouse, the usability has been improved by implementing a user interface that can be easily operated using a mouse. It can be used not only on computers, but also on various devices such as smartphones and tablets.

The Design QRcode Generator is currently being released as a trial operation on a cloud-based application execution platform (PaaS; Platform as a Service), but preparations are underway for a full-scale release in the future. With the release of this tool, anyone can create a two-dimensional code by embedding a QR code with a geometric pattern into an image such as a photograph, making it possible to create visually impressive advertising images. Expectations are high, and Associate Professor Kuribayashi and others are considering developing services for entertainment.
