Professor Eiichi Yufune of the Faculty of Informatics of Toyo University and Daiichi Kosho Co., Ltd. conducted a "Survey on Improving English Pronunciation by Singing Western Music Karaoke".It was confirmed that karaoke singing improved English pronunciation.

Daiichi Kosho has jointly developed an English pronunciation notation system "Nipponglish" with Professor Yufune and others, and has been incorporating it as a Western karaoke service since October 2017. "Nipponglish" is based on the theory of English phonetics, and is attached as katakana ruby to the telop lyrics of English songs as the original singing voice is heard. It assists visually native-like pronunciation, such as linking in which the preceding and following words are connected and the pronunciation changes, and stressful accents are expressed in katakana sizes.

This time, Professor Yufune and his colleagues established a learning method to improve the "speaking" skill, which is an issue of English education, and conducted a survey on improving English pronunciation by karaoke singing in order to encourage each educational institution to promote singing English songs. ..A total of 74 students, 49 students from Toyo University and 123 working adults working at Daiichi Kosho, were examined by reading aloud and singing to improve the English pronunciation of "Nipponglish".

TESOL (Teaching English to non-native English speakers) the audio data recorded by reading aloud a file containing only English text containing English sound changes and a file with Nipponglish katakana added to the same English text. Teaching method) Comparative evaluation by qualification holders. As a result, it was found that 83% of the subjects pronounced like native speakers when the Katakana notation of Nipponglish was given.

In addition, we practiced singing with regular Western karaoke and karaoke with Japanese katakana notation, and verified whether English pronunciation improved. Numerical evaluations are performed by TESOL qualification holders and Japanese English phoneticians, and the evaluation points before and after practice are compared. As a result, 87% of the subjects improved their English pronunciation evaluation by singing Western karaoke five times. It turned out that singing in the katakana notation of Nipponglish sounds like a native speaker.

Based on the results of this survey, the research team of Professor Yufune and others said that Nipponglish's Western karaoke will be the best English pronunciation teaching material for people who are not good at pronouncing English or who are not good at learning English. We recommend the use of karaoke in education.
