The National Institutes of Biomedical Innovation, Health and Nutrition, RIKEN, and the Japan Science and Technology Agency have started a ministry-to-ministerial research project with the aim of developing artificial intelligence that accelerates the creation of new drugs. In addition to the three institutions, 3 universities and public research institutes such as Kyoto University, Osaka University, Kyushu Institute of Technology, and National Cancer Research Center will cooperate in the research.

According to the Japan Science and Technology Agency, this project aims to discover in vivo molecules such as proteins that are new drug discovery targets for lung cancer and sudden deafness.Build a database of existing knowledge such as clinical information and literature, and develop artificial intelligence that estimates drug discovery targets by utilizing it.

It is said that drug discovery research continues to be stagnant due to the depletion of drug discovery targets, but the goal is to energize the research by providing the discovered drug discovery targets to pharmaceutical companies.

The National Institutes of Biomedical Innovation, Health and Nutrition has been building a database for drug discovery target search utilizing artificial intelligence in the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare project since FY2017.This time, the project has been restarted within the framework of the public-private R & D investment expansion program under the jurisdiction of the Council for Science, Technology and Innovation. The initiative was expanded by incorporating the project of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology.

The Public-Private R & D Investment Expansion Program is a program that was started with the aim of expanding public-private R & D investment in order to create innovation.
