On June 2024, 6, Springer Nature announced the "Nature Index Research Leaders 18" (formerly known as the Nature Index Annual Tables), which ranks universities and research institutions around the world based on the number of academic papers published, among other factors.

The Nature Index Research Leaders 2024 is based on 145 papers published in 2023 from 75,707 natural science and health science journals selected by a group of independent researchers. The rankings are determined not only by the number of papers, but also by an indicator that measures the contribution of authors from a specific center (Share), and an indicator of percentage change adjusted to take into account annual fluctuations in the total number of papers (Adjusted Share).

In the 2024 country/region rankings, China, which topped the overall rankings in 2023, continues to take the top spot. In second place is the United States, in third place is Germany, in fourth place is the United Kingdom, and in fifth place is Japan. In sixth place is France, in seventh place is Canada, in eighth place is South Korea, in ninth place is India, and in tenth place is Switzerland.

In the ranking by research institution, all of the institutions in the top 10 overall were Chinese universities and research institutes, except for Harvard University in the United States in second place, the Max Planck Society in Germany in third place, and the French National Center for Scientific Research in sixth place. Furthermore, China was the only one of these 2 institutions to see an increase in its Adjusted Share.

There are three Japanese research institutions ranked in the top 100: the University of Tokyo (19th place, 2023th in 20), Kyoto University (47th place, 2023rd in 43), and Osaka University (69th place, 2023th in 78). Tohoku University, which was 3th in 2023, will be ranked 99th. The Adjusted Share of these institutions increased by 104% for Osaka University, decreased by 8.7% for Kyoto University, and decreased by 6.9% for the University of Tokyo.
