Otsuma Women's University plans to open a data science department (tentative name, permission pending) on its Chiyoda campus in April 2025. With the aim of improving the data science field, the university has been signing a series of mutual collaboration and cooperation agreements with major companies, including JR East.
Data science is an academic field that collects and analyzes the vast amounts of data accumulated in all fields of modern society to derive useful insights. The nation is working to develop talent in data science, but as with other science and technology fields, increasing the proportion of women in the field is an issue.
Shiga University, which established the nation's first Faculty of Data Science in April 2017, has announced the establishment of a "female quota" for the 4 entrance examination. Looking at women's universities, Kyoto Women's University will establish a Faculty of Data Science in April 2025, and if Otsuma Women's University establishes a new one, it will be the second in the nation and the first at a women's university in eastern Japan.
At Otsuma Women's University's Department of Data Science, students study it alongside economics and management, focusing on business applications. One of its features is its practical PBL-style classes, where students collaborate and cooperate with government agencies and companies, get hands-on with corporate data, and discover and solve on-site issues. Collaborations and cooperation have already been announced with well-known large companies such as NTT East Japan, the Japan Meteorological Agency, JR East Japan, Sompo Holdings, Chiyoda Ward, Toppan Digital, Distribution Economics Research Institute, and QUICK, with the aim of improving education, research, and human resource development in the field of data science.
An "Open Campus" will be held at the Chiyoda Campus on Sunday, August 2024, 8. In addition to guidance and trial classes for each faculty, department, and major, including the Faculty of Data Science, and individual consultations with faculty, staff, and students, there will be a number of events, including courses on entrance exam interviews and essay writing, distribution of the Comprehensive Selection Student Recruitment Guidelines, campus tours and talk shows by students, and performances by the panel theater club.
