The "Setouchi Art Future Research Center," which Kagawa University has been developing in Ajicho, Takamatsu City, Kagawa Prefecture as a regional research base for the Setouchi area, has been completed and an opening ceremony was held. In collaboration with Tokyo University of the Arts, the center aims to combine art and science to solve marine environmental problems and local issues.

According to Kagawa University, the opening ceremony was attended by about 80 people, including Kagawa University President Natsuo Ueda, Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology Director-General of the Science and Technology Policy Bureau Yuichi Inoue, Kagawa Prefecture Governor Toyoto Ikeda, and Tokyo University of the Arts President Katsuhiko Hibino. After President Ueda expressed his gratitude to those involved and his determination to tackle various issues, a talk session was held with Tokyo University of the Arts President Hibino, Kagawa University Vice President Kazuya Akimitsu, and Innovation Design Research Institute Director Yoshiyuki Kakei.

The facility is a three-story steel-framed building built overlooking the Seto Inland Sea. It is equipped with a gallery, studio, and atelier, and will fuse art and science to advance research into biodiversity and marine littering. It will also disseminate research results to the nation and the world as a model for creating innovation, calling for people to change their behavior. It will also be used as a place for human resource development.

The facility was developed with support from the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology as part of the "Industry-Academia-Government Collaboration and Joint Research Facility Development Project through Collaboration between Regional Core and Distinctive Research Universities." Kagawa University, which has been conducting various research projects such as the issue of microplastics in the Seto Inland Sea, and Tokyo University of the Arts, Japan's leading arts hub, will join forces to create innovation based on spiritual richness.
