Otemae University has received approval from the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology for its plan to open a Faculty of Science and Engineering in 2025. As we enter a new era of accelerating digitalization and decarbonization, the university will train human resources to lead the industrial sector, which is expected to continue to undergo drastic changes.
According to Otemae University, the Faculty of Science and Engineering has four departments: Mathematics and Data Science, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical and Electronic Engineering, and Information Engineering. The enrollment quota is 4 students, with 200 in the Mathematics and Data Science Department, 30 each in the Mechanical Engineering Department and Electrical and Electronic Engineering Department, and 50 in the Information Engineering Department. First-year students study at the Ibaraki Sojiji Campus in Ota Toshiba-cho, Ibaraki City, Osaka Prefecture, and second-year students and onwards study at the Ibaraki Ai Campus in Nishiai, Ibaraki City.
The addition of a science faculty to the existing eight humanities and social science faculties will make the university a comprehensive university with both humanities and science. The university aims to train engineers who can approach issues in the local community from the perspectives of both science and engineering, and to become a base for innovation that utilizes comprehensive knowledge.
In modern society, digital technologies such as AI and virtual reality are rapidly evolving, while countries are competing to develop decarbonization technologies such as renewable energy. A shortage of engineers in these fields is predicted in Japan, and Otemae University's Faculty of Science and Engineering has been selected for the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology's University and College of Technology Function Strengthening Support Project, which supports the conversion of faculties to cultivate highly specialized human resources.
