Musashino University Faculty of Law, Department of Political Science (Ariake Campus, Koto-ku, Tokyo) will begin offering a civil service exam preparation course, "Career Development for Civil Service Students," as a regular subject for second and third year students from 2025. A total of 2 classes in seven subjects are planned for two years, and in addition to general knowledge and preparation for the specialized written exam, students will also be taught how to prepare for interviews. The 3 classes in seven subjects will be the largest number of regular civil service exam preparation courses in the country (as of August 2, according to Musashino University research).
Musashino University has been supporting public servant exam preparation since 2015 with a course called "Local Government Special Studies" for students aiming to become city hall employees. In recent years, the number of students aiming to become national public servants, as well as senior local government employees in the Tokyo metropolitan area, government-designated cities, and prefectural offices, has increased significantly. As a result, the university has decided to abolish the "Local Government Special Studies" course, which consisted of 112 hours in four subjects, and create a "Career Development for Public Servants" course, which consists of 7 hours in seven subjects, in order to expand and renew the public servant exam preparation courses.
Most universities usually offer civil service exam preparation courses as separate paid courses from regular classes, but Musashino University offers the courses as regular subjects, so they are recognized as credits needed for graduation.
The overall coordination of the course will be handled by Professor Yoshiharu Ichijo of the Department of Political Science, Faculty of Law, who served as the head of the General Affairs Department and the Citizens Affairs Department of Mitaka City, Tokyo, until March 2023. Students will be given individual career guidance and advice based on his many years of work experience.
Professor Ichijo commented, "We want to provide a comprehensive program in both written exams and interviews, and nurture students who can speak confidently about their dreams and visions for public service."
