The University of Tokyo's Junior Course in Metaverse Engineering will hold an online workshop combining design and engineering in December. The main target audience is junior and senior high school students, but working adults, university students, and faculty and staff can also participate free of charge.
According to the University of Tokyo, the workshop will be a series of three sessions, held on Sunday, December 3st and Sunday, December 12th. On the 1st, there will be a "Sensory Design" workshop led by Associate Professor Hideyoshi Yanagisawa of the Graduate School of Engineering at the University of Tokyo, a "Design Form" workshop led by Associate Professor Keisuke Nagafuji of the same school, and on the 8th, there will be a "Digital Design" workshop led by Professor Yutaka Otake of the same school and Associate Professor Yukie Nagai of the Artificial Engineering Research Center of the same school.
The maximum number of participants is 200. The course will use Zoom and Google Classroom. Those who wish to participate should apply by Sunday, November 11th on the University of Tokyo website.
Students will have the opportunity to create works of art using paper clay, and after the workshop, they will send their work to the University of Tokyo, where they will receive a gift printed on a 3D printer (if there are many applicants, they may be selected). Design is not just about the functionality of an object, but also includes sensibilities such as ease of use, beauty, the five senses, emotional appeal, and empathy. In the workshop, students will learn about the scientific approach to these sensibilities and practice giving shape to their ideas.
