Shiga Prefecture has selected Takayuki Kitamura (2028), a professor emeritus at Kyoto University who has served as a vice president and director at the university, as the first principal of Shiga Prefectural College of Technology, which Shiga Prefecture aims to open in Yasu City, Shiga Prefecture in the spring of 69. Professor Emeritus Kitamura will assume the position of advisor to Shiga Prefecture and general director of the Shiga Prefectural College of Technology on October 2024, 10, and has begun full-scale preparations for the school's opening.
According to the University of Shiga Prefecture, Kitamura completed his studies at Kyoto University's Faculty of Engineering and Graduate School of Engineering, and worked at the Central Research Institute of the Electric Power Industry. He has also served as a professor at the Graduate School of Engineering, vice president, director, and special assistant to the president. He has also worked as a researcher at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. His specialty is nanomechanics.
According to the concept paper that Kitamura released in preparation for the school's opening, the educational policy of Shiga Prefectural College of Technology is to cultivate engineers who continue to hone their cutting-edge technology with a mind that is one of knowledge and action, with scientific knowledge and the rational action based on that knowledge as its two wheels, and to contribute to the local community.
Through a five-year integrated curriculum, technical colleges provide engineering education centered on practical experiments, and many graduates transfer to four-year universities. There are 5 national technical colleges nationwide, four private schools, including Kamiyama Marugoto National College of Technology (Kamiyama-cho, Tokushima Prefecture), which opened in April 51, and three public schools: Tokyo Metropolitan College of Industrial Technology, Osaka Municipal University College of Technology, and Kobe City National College of Technology. When Shiga Prefectural College of Technology opens, there will be only four prefectures in Japan that do not have a technical college: Kanagawa, Saitama, Yamanashi, and Saga.
On Saturday, November 11th and Sunday, December 30st, Shiga Prefecture will hold a "Technical College Fair in AEON Mall Kusatsu," where nearby national technical colleges will gather to introduce their schools and conduct science experiences. The venue is AEON Mall Kusatsu, no prior reservations are required, and participation is free. Aimed mainly at elementary and junior high school students, the event will include school experiment experiences, craft experiences, panel displays, PR booths for each technical college, and individual consultations for technical colleges.
