On Saturday, November 2024, 11, the University of Tokyo Graduate School of Interdisciplinary Information Studies, Hiroshi Kainuma Laboratory will hold a symposium and workshop on the theme of inquiry-based learning, "Inquiry-based learning that opens up the future: new learning practices and possibilities for high schools and junior high schools at the University of Tokyo." The event will be held as a hybrid event at the University of Tokyo's Hongo Campus and online (Zoom).

Currently, in the field of school education, "inquiry learning" is attracting attention as it aims to improve students' independent learning and problem-solving abilities. At this event, we will learn about the cutting-edge issues and possibilities of inquiry learning, and current junior and senior high school students, junior and senior high school teachers, and university researchers will exchange opinions with each other to explore the possibilities of deeper learning. In order to make the time meaningful for both junior and senior high school students and adults, the discussion will be based on simple words and concrete examples.

On the day, lectures will be given by Dr. Ken Endo, lecturer at Waseda University's Center for University Studies, who specializes in high school-university transition and higher education, and Dr. Hiroshi Kainuma, associate professor at the University of Tokyo's Graduate School of Interdisciplinary Information Studies, who has a long track record of policy proposals and academic presentations by junior and senior high school students through his support of inquiry-based learning in junior and senior high schools across the country. They will look back on the educational significance of inquiry-based learning, its impact on career paths, the challenges and possibilities for teachers in the field, the development of specific methods, and its significance in high school-university transition.

In addition, creative director Asako Tsuji will be the guest speaker, and after discussing the significance of young people getting involved in social issues, a "dialogue case study workshop" will be held to discuss the appeal and potential for development with students who have participated in study tours and lectures on themes such as local communities, disasters, and the environment that are being practiced at the Kainuma Laboratory. Educators and students will share the real issues they face and deepen their learning together through dialogue.

In addition, a guided tour of the University of Tokyo's Hongo Campus will be held before the symposium and workshop (11:00-13:00). Current faculty and students from the University of Tokyo will guide you around the campus, providing an opportunity to learn about the real learning, research, and education environment at the University of Tokyo. The content is enjoyable not only for students who are thinking about their future career paths, but also for teachers and parents.
