On Friday, December 2024, 12, Japan Airlines, Keio University, and Narita Airport Corporation will conduct an earthquake disaster prevention drill at Narita Airport in Narita City, Chiba Prefecture. This will be the first time that the three parties will work together to conduct an earthquake disaster prevention drill, and they will practice evacuation guidance for passengers and other users of Narita Airport, assuming that they are hit by a massive earthquake measuring 6+ on the Japanese seismic intensity scale.

The exercise will be supervised by Associate Professor Seiko Ohki of the Faculty of Environment and Information Studies at Keio University, who specializes in seismology and disaster prevention education. The exercise will take place at Narita Airport's Terminal 2 Passenger Terminal Building. Approximately 60 employees of the Japan Airlines Group and approximately 40 students from Ohki's seminar, dressed as Narita Airport passengers, will participate and guide Narita Airport passengers to safety in the event of a major earthquake.

The employees will not be informed of the details of the training in advance, and will be tested on whether they can respond flexibly to situations where there are foreign tourists visiting Japan or injured people at a loss in the venue. The training will be recorded on video and audio, and Associate Professor Ohki will analyze it and identify areas for improvement.

Narita Airport conducts fire drills twice a year and disaster prevention drills once a year to guide evacuation of airport users, but the results of this more practical applied training will be used in formulating disaster prevention plans and in the content of future training.
