On January 2025, 1, the University of Tsukuba Malaysia welcomed students from Ibaraki Prefectural Mito Second High School.

 Mito Daini High School is a prefectural high school with over 120 years of history since it was founded as the first girls' high school in Ibaraki Prefecture, where the University of Tsukuba is headquartered. The school has been designated as a "IVth Super Science High School" by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology for five years from 2023, and is conducting research and development to develop female scientists and science leaders who have the ability to inquire and actively aim for the world.

 This time, the students who visited Malaysia as part of the SSH program visited the University of Tsukuba Malaysia. They were welcomed by Dean Maki Tsujimura, and Associate Professor Yoichi Yamada gave a presentation. The high school students also gave a presentation, with students from the Malaysian school also participating. Hidehiro Yamada, president of Hitachi High-Tech Malaysia, also joined the group, and they had the chance to try out a Hitachi electron microscope.

 The University of Tsukuba Malaysia (School of Interdisciplinary Science and Design) will open in the capital, Kuala Lumpur, in September 2024. It will be the first time that a faculty that awards degrees from a Japanese university will be established overseas. The campus is located at the top university in Malaysia, the University of Malaya (ranked 9th in the QS World University Rankings 2025), and the first class of 60 students (1 Malaysian and 13 Japanese) is currently studying there.
