Since its establishment in April 2013, Meiji University's School of Interdisciplinary Mathematical Sciences has been conducting education and research based on mathematical science under the philosophy of "creating, developing, and disseminating mathematical science that contributes to society." In order to further strengthen education related to data science and artificial intelligence (AI) from the 4 academic year, the school will change the names of existing departments, strengthen the curriculum, and start as a "new School of Interdisciplinary Mathematical Sciences."
Meiji University's project plan "Meiji University Mathematical Data Science Artificial Intelligence Expert Development Program" was selected for the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology's "Support for Strengthening Functions of Universities and Colleges of Technology" in 2024, Support 2 "Support for Strengthening Functions to Secure Advanced Information Specialists." This project plans to systematize and strengthen education related to mathematics, data science, and AI at the Graduate School of Advanced Mathematical Sciences by 2030, and the School of Integrated Mathematics, which serves as the foundation for this, will implement the following initiatives from 2026.
First, the name of the department will be changed from "Phenomenal Mathematics Department" to "Phenomenal Mathematics and Statistics Department." Since its inception, the department has focused on teaching mathematical science and statistical science, but this time, the department will further enhance its educational content related to statistics, data science, and AI, and will increase the number of seminar subjects related to graduation research that deal with themes in the field of statistical science, so the department name will be changed to more clearly express the educational content.
Next, with the aim of increasing the number of students moving on to the Graduate School of Advanced Mathematical Sciences, the admission quotas for the Department of Phenomenological Mathematics and Statistics and Department of Network Design in the School of Integrated Mathematics will be increased from 90 to 105 students each. In addition, new courses will be established in the Department of Phenomenological Mathematics and Statistics: Mathematics of Time Series and Generative Models, and Machine Learning Programming Exercises, as well as in the Department of Network Design: Edge AI Systems and Natural Language Processing.
The program will also add five faculty members specializing in data science and AI (four full-time and one specially appointed), and will strengthen its research guidance system by expanding the curriculum through the creation of new subjects and increasing the number of graduation research topics related to data science and AI.
Please note that changes to department names, admission quotas, and subject names are currently being planned as of March 2025, and the plans may be subject to change.
