Kirioka Gakuen (Midori City, Gunma Prefecture) has announced that it will change the name of Kiryu University, which it operates, to "Gunma Future University." The English spelling will be "GUNMA MIRAI UNIVERSITY," and the initials "GMU" will be used in the logo.
The school originated as Kiryu Sewing School for Girls, founded in 1901, and is now a comprehensive institution that includes Kiryu University, Kiryu University Junior College, Kiryu Daiichi High School, etc. Kiryu University has a nursing department (100 students) and a nutrition department (60 students) in the School of Health Sciences, and an art and design department (50 students) in the junior college.
The university plans to open a new campus in front of Ota Station (Ota City, Gunma Prefecture), which is served by three Tobu Railway lines: the Isesaki Line, the Kiryu Line, and the Koizumi Line, in April 2027. In addition, prior to this, the university is strengthening cooperation between Ota City and Midori City, where the current campus is located, and is promoting a wide-area academic city concept together with Kiryu City, where Kiryu Daiichi Junior High School and Kiryu Daiichi High School are located.
In conjunction with the name change of the university, Kiryu University Junior College will be renamed "Gunma Future University Junior College" and Kiryu University Attached Kindergarten will be renamed "Gunma Future University Attached Kindergarten." In addition, in order to further promote integrated education as a junior high and high school, Kiryu University Attached Junior High School will be renamed "Kiryu Daiichi Junior High School."
